Homemade Granola with Raisins (Brooklyn style & vegan)

Granola is exceptionally good eating. It is easy to make and has many creative variations such as using dried fruit including cranberries, mango, pineapple, etc. instead of raisins. I personally love the fact that it tastes so much better than store bought cereals & snacks. The cost to put this together is so minimal! A good idea because these are ingrediants that you’ll be using for many other meals and they are very inexpensive.

My ma made this with me when I was young and I appreciate everything she taught me about good, healthy vegan cooking. This particular recipe is my own creative mix based on personal experiences later on in life on a tight, urban budget.

Ready? Let’s do this!


4 cups oats (rolled oats, not quick mix)
1 cup flour
1/2 tsp salt

Mix these dry ingrediants together in a bowl and set in the fridge for about 10 minutes. Let that chill while we work on the sweet stuff in the meantime. 

Sweet Stuff

1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup oil
1/4 cup margarine
1 cup dried fruits (choose raisins or cranberries or mango or pineapple)

In a sauce pan, on very low heat, put oil and margarine. When melted down, add brown sugar. Let this melt into mixture and stir until sweet, yummy liquid. Keep warm to maintain liquid state.

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

Grease baking sheets, pans, whatever you normally bake in.

Take what’s chillin’ out of the fridge. Pour the sweet liquid mixture over the dry oatmeal chilled and stir. When well-mixed, squish together with hands and release. By doing this, we are forming these delicious clumps of yummy, brown sugar sweetened oats. Not too much, it doesn’t take too much. We’ll have better chunks of sweet and yum later.

If you are intending to make granola bars, stir into mixture dried fruits of raisins, or whatever you have chosen.

If you intend to make granola cereal, hold off the dried fruits for now.

Pour oats and sweet liquid mixture into baking pans. Spread evenly across baking pan. Bake at 300 degrees for 40 minutes.

After 40 minutes, take out of the oven and if intending to make granola bars slice into shapes right now. If making granola cereal, let it cool out for about 10 minutes.

Once cool, break into chunks and add dried fruits such as raisins, etc.

If you got honey, feel free to drizzle on the granola and bake for a few extra minutes.

Store in covered container or sealed bags. You can freeze this for future use, too. Yum!
